Should Meta's AI Agent Answer Your DMs?

Meta Business Agent answers WhatsApp, Messenger and Instagram messages for you. What it does, what Meta One charges, and the checks before turning it on.

The short answer: Meta Business Agent is Meta's AI that answers customer messages on WhatsApp, Messenger and Instagram for your business. It can answer questions, book appointments and qualify leads. Meta launched it globally on 3 June 2026 as free to start. Its 15 September 2026 announcement of Meta One puts more Business Agent capacity in paid business plans starting at $14.99 a month. For a small business drowning in "are you open Saturday?" messages, it is worth a careful trial. Feed it accurate information, set when it hands over to a person, and remember that you are responsible for what it says.

Most local service businesses get a steady stream of Facebook and Instagram messages that nobody answers until the evening. Meta now offers to answer them for you, from inside the apps your customers already use.

Meta Business Agent is the customer-service AI. It is different from Meta AI, the analyst that reads your page and ad data and writes reports. That tool is covered in what Meta's AI tools for small business actually do.

What does Meta Business Agent do?

Meta's launch post (3 June 2026) says the agent can:

It replies in the customer's language, and Meta says it uses your tone. Meta also says more than one million businesses were already using a Business Agent on WhatsApp and Messenger at launch. That is Meta's own figure. Instagram was added at launch. A "morning briefing" summarising overnight chats is being tested with a select number of businesses.

How much does it cost?

Two answers, because Meta changed the model after launch:

What Meta saidDate
At launch"Getting started is free. In the coming months, businesses will access the agent through paid subscription offerings."3 June 2026
Meta One EssentialFrom $14.99 a month: "more access to Meta Business Agent on WhatsApp", plus a verified badge and impersonation protection15 September 2026
Meta One AdvancedFrom $49.99 a month: "even more Meta Business Agent responses", team access, scheduling, exportable analytics15 September 2026
Meta One Expert and MaxFrom $149 and $499 a month: the highest Business Agent capacity, for teams at scale15 September 2026

Meta's announcement adds that "plans, benefits, pricing, and availability may vary by region, by app, and by account". It doesn't give Canadian pricing or confirm which plans Canadian accounts can buy. Start the subscription flow in your own account to see what is offered. Larger businesses on Meta's developer platform are billed differently, by usage.

For comparison, a custom chatbot or AI receptionist usually costs more each month, but it works on your website and phone line too, not only inside Meta's apps.

Is it available in Canada?

Meta said on 3 June 2026 that it was expanding Business Agent "to businesses big and small globally", and Meta One launched "globally". Neither announcement names Canada or lists countries, and Meta's own wording allows for regional differences. The practical test takes two minutes: open Meta Business Suite, or the WhatsApp Business app, and see whether the Business Agent option appears for your account.

What should you check before switching it on?

1. You are responsible for what it says

In Moffatt v. Air Canada (2024 BCCRT 149), BC's Civil Resolution Tribunal held a company liable for wrong information its website chatbot gave a customer. It rejected the argument that the bot was a separate entity. An AI agent replying from your Facebook Page is your business speaking. If it quotes a price you don't charge or promises a same-day call-out you can't make, expect the customer to hold you to it. Whether you have to tell customers it's AI covers the BC rules in more detail.

2. It only knows what you give it

Before switching it on, put your current hours, service area, price ranges, booking rules and the things you don't do into your Page information and catalogue. The agent answers from that. Stale hours or a five-year-old price list become wrong answers.

3. Decide when it hands over

Meta lets the business decide when a person steps in. Set handover for anything involving a complaint, a custom quote, a safety issue, or a customer who asks for a person. A bot that loops a frustrated customer is worse than a slow reply.

4. Check what happens to your existing auto-replies

A setup guide published on 3 October 2026 quotes Meta's Help Centre on this. It says turning on Business Agent pauses existing Business Suite automations, such as away messages and instant replies. Meta's Help Centre wording couldn't be checked directly for this post. Either way, look at your Inbox automations after you turn the agent on, so a carefully written away message doesn't silently stop.

5. Say what you keep

Conversations with the agent are stored, and BC's Personal Information Protection Act expects you to state the purpose when you collect personal information. A line in the Page's information and in your privacy policy covers it: messages may be answered by an automated assistant, and why you keep them.

When is it the wrong tool?

It suits businesses with high message volume and repetitive questions: hours, availability, "do you service Valleyview", booking a slot. That is the same ground covered by the five-minute rule for lead response: the first reply wins more often than the best reply.

Common questions

What is Meta Business Agent?

Meta Business Agent is Meta's AI that answers customer messages on WhatsApp, Messenger and Instagram for a business. It can answer questions, recommend products, book appointments and qualify leads, and hands over to a person at a point the business chooses. Meta launched it globally on 3 June 2026.

Is Meta Business Agent free?

It was free to start at launch on 3 June 2026, and Meta said it would move to paid subscriptions. Meta One business plans announced on 15 September 2026 start at $14.99 a month and include more Business Agent capacity at higher tiers. Meta says pricing and availability may vary by region.

Can I use Meta Business Agent in Canada?

Meta describes both Business Agent and Meta One as global, but neither announcement names Canada, and Meta says availability varies by region and account. Check Meta Business Suite or the WhatsApp Business app on your own account; if the option appears, it is available to you.

Am I liable for what Meta's AI agent tells my customers?

Treat it as yes. In Moffatt v. Air Canada (2024), BC's Civil Resolution Tribunal held a company liable for wrong information its chatbot gave a customer and rejected the argument that the bot was a separate entity. Keep the agent's information accurate and hand anything uncertain to a person.

Should I use Meta Business Agent or a custom chatbot?

Use Meta's agent if most enquiries arrive as Facebook, Instagram or WhatsApp messages and are repetitive. Use a custom chatbot or AI receptionist if enquiries come through your website or phone, need your own booking system, or need answers Meta's Page information can't hold.

The honest summary

Meta Business Agent is the cheapest way yet to answer social media messages around the clock. For a busy local business, the slow reply is often what loses the job. It is also your business talking, with your name on it and BC precedent saying you own what it says.

Trial it on one channel. Load it with accurate information, set a clear handover, check your existing auto-replies, and read every conversation for the first two weeks. If your enquiries mostly arrive somewhere Meta can't reach, AI automation for Kamloops businesses can cover the website and phone side as well.
