Apple Maps Ads Hit Canada. Should You Buy Them?

Apple opened Maps advertising to Canadian businesses on 14 August. The listing is still free, the ads are not, and most trades are banned from buying.

The short answer: on 14 August 2026 Apple opened advertising on Apple Maps to businesses in the United States and Canada — the only two eligible countries. For most local businesses the answer is no, not yet. Your Apple Maps listing is free and always has been, it is the part that actually matters, and most owners have never claimed theirs. And if you run a trade, the decision is already made for you: Apple's advertising policy prohibits home services outright, so a plumber or roofer cannot buy a Maps ad at any price. Claim the free listing. Skip the ads.

Apple Maps became a paid channel in Canada eleven days ago, and the advice going around is the usual advice about a new ad platform: get in early, before it gets expensive.

That is worth ignoring for a moment, because a more useful thing happened first. An Apple Maps ad is a sponsored placement at the top of Maps search results, or at the top of the Suggested Places list before a user has searched at all. It is optional. The place card — the panel showing your name, hours, phone, photos and directions when someone taps your business — is free, was free before all this, and is the thing most Kamloops businesses still have not sorted out.

What actually changed

Three dates matter, and only one of them is about advertising.

On 24 March 2026 Apple announced Apple Business, folding three separate products — Apple Business Manager, Apple Business Essentials and Apple Business Connect — into one platform. It launched on 14 April 2026 in more than 200 countries and regions, free of charge. Anything you had already claimed in Business Connect moved across automatically: locations, place card details, photos, account settings.

The practical consequence is that the address changed. Your listing now lives at business.apple.com. Most guides you will find still say "Apple Business Connect" and still point at the old URL, which is a reliable sign the page has not been touched since April.

Then on 14 August 2026, Apple opened Maps ad buying to businesses in the United States and Canada. Businesses with five or fewer locations can buy directly inside Apple Business. Anyone larger gets routed to the Apple Ads platform.

Does anyone here actually use Apple Maps?

Fewer people than use Google. That is the honest starting point, and any post that skips it is selling you something.

BrightLocal's Local Consumer Review Survey 2026 — a panel of 1,002 US adults — found Google Search is still the first place 45% of consumers start a local search, while all map apps combined account for about 20%. Apple Maps is a slice of that slice. If you have a choice about where to spend an afternoon, your Google Business Profile is still the higher-return afternoon, every time.

Two things complicate that, though.

The first is the installed base. iPhones account for roughly 60% of mobile use in Canada, going by StatCounter's page-view measurements, and Apple Maps ships preinstalled on every one of them. A driver coming into Kamloops off Highway 5 with their phone on a mount is looking at Apple Maps unless they went out of their way to install something else. Nobody chose that. It is just the default.

The second is direction of travel. The same BrightLocal survey found the share of US consumers reading reviews on Apple Maps went from 14% in 2025 to 27% in 2026. That is one year of one survey, so hold it loosely. But the number is going the right way for Apple, and the listing costs nothing.

You already have an Apple Maps listing, and you did not make it

This is the part that surprises people.

Apple Maps has historically assembled its place data from around twenty third-party providers — Yelp, Foursquare, TripAdvisor, Booking.com among them — over a base mapping layer from TomTom. Your business very likely appears on Apple Maps right now, built from data you never submitted.

Which means it can be wrong, and often is. Old hours. A phone number from two owners ago. A pin dropped in the wrong lane of a business park. You cannot correct any of it until you claim the location, and until you do, every iPhone user who looks you up gets whatever a third-party database happened to have.

Go and look at your own business in Maps on an iPhone before you read any further. That five-second check settles whether this post is urgent for you or not.

Can your business even buy an Apple Maps ad?

For a large number of Kamloops businesses, no. Apple published its advertising policy on 14 July 2026, and it excludes categories Google has always accepted. This is the single biggest difference between the two platforms and almost nothing written about the launch mentions it.

CategoryCan it advertise on Apple Maps?
PlumbingNo — prohibited
ElectricalNo — prohibited
HVACNo — prohibited
RoofingNo — prohibited
General contractingNo — prohibited
LocksmithNo — prohibited
Pest controlNo — prohibited
Bail bondsNo — prohibited
Cryptocurrency ATMsNo — prohibited
Medical servicesCase by case, at Apple's discretion
Political advertisingNo — prohibited
Restaurants, retail, salons, gyms, professional servicesYes

If you are a trade, that table is the whole decision. You are not weighing a budget. You are excluded from the channel, and the correct response is to spend nothing and claim the free listing instead.

It is worth understanding why, because it tells you something about the platform. Home services is one of the largest and most fraud-prone categories in local advertising — the reason Google layers extra verification, audits and licence checks onto it. Apple appears to have looked at that problem and declined to take it on at launch. "At launch" is doing some work in that sentence; the policy could change. It has not yet.

How to claim your Apple Maps listing

This takes about an hour, once. Nothing here costs money.

  1. Use a business Apple Account, not your personal one. Whoever owns that login owns the listing. If it is the phone in your pocket and you sell the business or lose the phone, that is a problem you have created for later.
  2. Sign in at business.apple.com and search for your business. If Apple already has it — from that third-party data — claim it. If not, add it.
  3. Verify ownership. Apple will offer a route: a code by phone, an email at your domain, or documentation such as a business licence, lease or utility bill. Phone verification is usually the quickest. Verification is not instant, so start it before you need it.
  4. Fill in the place card properly. Name, address or service area, categories, hours, phone, website, logo, photos. Match your name, address and phone exactly to what you use on Google and everywhere else — inconsistent details across directories are the quiet reason a business looks untrustworthy to every platform at once.
  5. Add your action links. Order, book, reserve, get a quote — whichever applies. This is the part that converts a listing into a call, and it is the step most people skip.
  6. Put a reminder in the calendar for six months out. Hours change, numbers change, and an abandoned listing is worse than a thin one.

If you want the cross-directory version of step 4, the NAP consistency checker prints your canonical format and the list of places to fix it, and local citations for a Kamloops business covers the rest of the directories worth an hour.

What transfers from Google, and what does not

If you have already done the work on Google, some of it carries over and some of it does not.

The review line is the one that catches people. Apple Maps has no written reviews. It uses thumbs up and thumbs down, with ratings on individual attributes, and has done since it launched ratings in Canada in August 2021. So the review-generation system you built for Google does not transfer. There is no Apple equivalent of a review link to text a customer, and no reply box to answer one in. If you have been working on what your Google reviews actually say, keep doing that for Google, and treat Apple as a separate, simpler surface.

So should you buy the ads?

For most local businesses reading this: not this year.

The reasoning is not that Apple's product is bad. It is that you are being asked to spend into a channel that is eleven days old, whose pricing Apple has not published, in a country with a fraction of the search volume of Google, before the free version of the same listing is even claimed. That ordering is wrong regardless of how good the ads turn out to be.

There is one real deadline, and you should know about it before deciding. Apple is offering a 15% monthly statement credit on Maps ad spend — capped at US$1,000 a month, running for one year from your first campaign — to businesses that buy media by credit card by 11 October 2026. If you already spend meaningfully on local ads, are in an eligible category, and have the budget to run a genuine test rather than a token one, that offer is a reason to test now rather than in January.

Everyone else: claim the listing, fix the details, and put the money where the searches are. The same trade-off applies here as in Google Ads versus local SEO — paid gets you visible today, the free listing keeps working after you stop paying.

Common questions

Do Apple Maps ads work in Canada? Yes. Apple opened Maps advertising to businesses in the United States and Canada on 14 August 2026, and those are currently the only two eligible countries. Businesses with five or fewer locations buy directly inside Apple Business; larger advertisers are routed to the Apple Ads platform.

Is an Apple Maps business listing free? Yes. Claiming and managing your place card at business.apple.com costs nothing, and did before advertising existed. Advertising is the only paid part of the platform. Anything telling you that Apple Maps presence now requires a budget is confusing the listing with the ads.

Can a plumber or roofer advertise on Apple Maps? No. Apple's advertising policy, effective 14 July 2026, prohibits ads promoting home services, naming plumbing, electrical, locksmith, HVAC, pest control, roofing and general contracting. Trades can still claim and optimise a free listing, which is where their effort should go.

What happened to Apple Business Connect? It became part of Apple Business on 14 April 2026, alongside Apple Business Manager and Apple Business Essentials. Existing claimed locations, place card details and photos migrated automatically. The platform now lives at business.apple.com rather than the old Business Connect address.

Does Apple Maps have reviews like Google? Not in the same form. Apple Maps uses thumbs up and thumbs down plus ratings on specific attributes, with no written review text and no public replies. A Google review strategy does not transfer, so keep them as separate jobs.

Is Apple Maps worth bothering with if Google is bigger? Yes, for the listing. Google is still where most local searches start, but the Apple listing is free, takes about an hour once, and covers the map that is preinstalled on roughly 60% of Canadian phones. The ads are a separate question with a different answer.

The honest summary

Two things happened this year and they are easy to mix up. The free listing changed address, and a paid channel appeared beside it.

The free listing is the work. Claim it at business.apple.com, verify it, fill it in properly, match your details to your Google listing, and check it twice a year. That is an hour, it costs nothing, and it fixes a listing that is probably wrong right now because a third-party database wrote it for you.

The ads are optional, unpriced, unproven in Canada, and unavailable to the trades entirely. If you are a restaurant or a retailer with a real ad budget and an appetite to test, the 11 October credit deadline is a reason to move. If you are anyone else, the honest recommendation is to do the free hour and spend the money on the channel that already brings you calls.

If you want the listings across Google, Apple and everywhere else handled properly rather than half-claimed, that is what Google Business Profile management in Kamloops covers, and how to get your business on Google is the companion for the platform that still matters most.
